Abstract :
While the societal changes underway at the beginning of the 21st century are giving rise to new avenues of research on design and evaluation in architecture, the potential relationship between these two concepts has received little attention since the 1960s.This thesis posits that they can be understood as an interacting pair and that exploring their connections remains a key area of inquiry for grasping and theorizing the growing complexity of the contexts in which
architecture is produced. To identify these trends, she draws on an analysis of the most significant theoretical works produced by thirteen researchers or research teams over the past five decades in the French context. While highlighting the disciplinary and methodological specificities of this research –which stem from its various theoretical foundations in the humanities, cognitive sciences, and architecture– commonalities are identified in order to propose a model of the interactions between design and evaluation at different stages of the project process. The result of this work is the original manuscript included in Volume I of this dissertation. This volume provides the theoretical framework for Volume II, which compiles a selection of nine papers on design and evaluation that we had previously authored.
