Trawlers return 2 trawlers are acoasting back from a fishing day. A small crowd has gathered on the dock awaiting them like a ritual or a daily rendez-vous. Some tourists among them but also many inhabitants comen to give a hand to the unloading & directly buy fresh fish & shellfishes. _____ A quiet moment Recording silence. It’s an official day off. The village is quasi desert until late in the morning. Noone in sight. Only the wind & the ocean are roaming. Even the goelands make themselves discrets. _____ ON THE DYKE Walking along the dyke, facing the wind with a binaural microphone. A schizophonic effect : in one ear, the agitated outer sea with waves breaking on the dyke, in the other the quietness of inside port. ….. On the dyke 1 A static recording at mid-course of the dyke. A schizophonic effect : in the left ear, the agitated outer sea with waves breaking on the dike, in the right the quietness of inside port. ….. On the dyke 2 Another static recording at the point were the waves join the beach. _____ Motorbikes Young people passing by with their noisy motorcycles. Here in front of the « placitre du port », caught from the terrasse of the Quincy café. They are part of Lesconil sound markers. Everyone complains about, but some elder people admit they’ve done the same at their age… _____ Halyards in the wind Sound marker in the south-east of the village: Near the water sports centre, next to the 4 Vents beach, catamarans are stored. At the slightest breath of wind (i.e. almost constantly), their halyards flap against the masts, producing a rhythm that is both regular and constantly changing. _____ Catamaran’s launching Catamaran are getting to the water. Cédric has started to record the action from the top of the pier & juL pursue with binaural at the nearest of the group, when the teacher explain how to cord & raise the spi-veil. _____ Beach ambiance By the end of the afternoon, when the sea is at its warmest. An ambiance recording on the eastern beach. Unfortunately the beach-volley team had just stopped playing, but you can imagine… Further north one can ear the bells of 7 pm ringing. _____ Breizhonic A young local guy, who’d learned breton’s speaking (breizhonic) at Diwan’school, likes to seize the opportunity to talk with elder people, when he’s back to the village. _____ Eckmuhl’s cow Visit to the Lightninghouse of Eckmühl, in Pen’march, because of the first visit here by the canadian team in 1975. Climbing up the 290 steps, with a short talk with the security guard on the top platform. Explains where the former foghorn (the famous « cow of Eckmuhl ») was until 2000 & why she was stopped. _____ HALIOTIKA FRONTSIDE, INSIDE & BACKSIDE Since the closing of Lesconil’auction its activities have been transported to Le Guilvinec in a huge equipment called Haliotika, which gathers the unloading dock, the auction, the conditioning of sea production &, at the upper floor, a museum of fishing. We paid a visit there at a moment of intense activity. ….. Passengers deck Tourists watching the trawlers back from fishing, from the upper deck of Haliotika/auction/fishing museum. ….. Guided tour Guided tour of the fish auction at Guilvinec harbour. ….. The elder’s conversation On the side of the unloading dock, 4 or 5 old people, retired fishermen & 2 women are talking about fishes, fishing rules, fishing technics pratices, fishing evolution… _____ Rosery bird On my walk back from Guilvinec, I follow the Treffiagat beach and take a detour along a path running perpendicular to it, alongside a large reed bed (towards Le Léhan campsite). Surrounded by grasses almost taller than me, I am immersed in the intoxicating song of birds. They are undoubtedly reed warblers. A very immersive feeling of ubiquity… _____ Geophonia: Soothing rain stick On the rocks of Treffiagat beach, I point the shotgun microphone at a puddle of sea water that is gradually filling up with the rising tide. There are also small shells. You can hear the sounds of the sand and tiny pebbles following the surf in a relaxing, exhilarating effect… like a rain stick being turned very gently. _____ Biophonia On the path running alongside Kersauz beach, before entering Lesconil, a large green marshy area hides a pond, betrayed in the evening by the croaking of frogs… Here, you realise that Lesconil is a place where life is very much present… Biophony guaranteed here: frogs, crickets and birds sing their hearts out in the balmy late spring evening. _____ PLAISANCE HARBOUR
….. Moussaillon On the Langogen quay, there is a lively atmosphere at the marina. A mother and her two children are getting ready to set sail on a small yacht. The child hesitates, the mother gives advice… a young sailor (« moussaillon ») in training ! ….. Higher and higher On the Langogen quay, ambiance of the marina. A sailor climbs the mast with equipment (a pot of paint, it seems) with the help of a colleague operating a pulley (rack and pinion). How high will he climb? A moped passing in the background, seagulls… the iconic sounds of Lesconil harbour… ….. Plaisance violin On the yachting harbour’s deck, late in the evening. A violin’s player inside the cab conterpointed by distant seagulls. _____ The world’s largest ears (experience #3) Simultaneous recording of the 12 o’clock’ bells of Lesconil’s church. 4 takes at around 100 meters from the belltower: Heikki=East, Cédric=South, Meri=Ouest, juL=North. The best restitution would be a 4 points sound installation, but here we present a drastic stereo reduction : the 4 recordings have been transcoded in mono & then distributed on a stereo balance. We kept the length of each recording & synchronized them on the bells. _____ Market ambiance The wednesday morning market place. It is constituted by two rows of mobile market stalls. We walk through a long cross-fade effect of voices & bits of conversations caught on the way. _____ Accordeon player On the square beside the market, an accordionist is sitting on a bench & playing for the enjoyment of passers-by. _____ « Do seagulls have ears? » On the Quai du Vivier, an ambiance with discussions around a fish stall on one side and the shouts of children from the sailing school on the water on the other… and in between, pedestrians, cyclists and regulars passing by. A very lively moment in local life in Lesconil. _____ Almost anthropophonia A the beginning of Quai du Vivier, long recording to capture the different atmospheres of the place. Here, recording of passing cars, bicycles… a man walks by and quotes the title of Michel Audiard’s film ‘Le Cri du cormoran le soir au-dessus des jonques’ (The scream of the Cormorant in the Evening Above the Junks)! _____ Turnstones On the quay at La Criée, turnstones are chattering away! These little gregarious birds can often be found gathering together on a barge or quay… we often come across them. As for the seagull, it is always present… more than just a sound associated with Lesconil, it is THE omnipresent marker ! _____ The seagull’s pop song Unloading equipment from a fishing boat on the quayside nearby the former auction building. Pop music can be heard coming from the boat’s cabin. But is the star of this sequence who we think it is ? _____ UKIE A meeting with the crew of the UKIE (où qu’y est = where is it ?) boat returning from fishing. Helped by Morgan manipulating a little crane, Alex & his teammate are unloading & cleaning the boat, sorting & preparing the boxes of fishes, molluscs & crustaceans before bringing them the auction in Le Guilvinec. _____ Holiday camp Another sound mark of Lesconil nowadays. Here & there we regularly meet a herd of children in holiday camp, walking & joyfully talking in an organized disorder, guided by their supervisors. (Mixage of two occurrences) _____ Galochodrome We arrive at this square, which resembles a large roadside car park. Several groups of men, around twenty in total, most of them of a certain age, are busy at game. We discover the « galoche »: metal discs are thrown at a target a few steps away. We take out our microphones, intimidated by the atmosphere of discussions and clinking sounds here and there, at different pitches and intensities. But the welcome is warm, with curiosity on both sides… when a game ends, the president of the club welcomes us and explains the rules and how the game works. _____ THE 24 HOURS OF LESCONIL A specific protocole of this reconducted survey consisting in recording 10 minutes at the beginning of each hour, all through day, at a certain place. It gives a 4 hours long recording. A bit too much for a common listening. So how to reduce it on a time scale ? There is no obvious solution. Take smaller bits of each recording, trying to crossfade them for a fluid listening, remains very subjective.
