Jean-Paul Thibaud: “Silence of Mauá: an atmospheric ethnography of urban sounds”

  • Abstract:
This article is based on an investigation conducted in Mauá, a Brazilian city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The aim was to study the residential experience of Condominío Barão de Mauá, a neighborhood built on a contaminated area and subject to various types of risks. An atmospheric approach has been developed, based on an immersive, plural, collective and interactive investigation: immersed, due to using an in situ investigation, within the Barão de Mauá residential complex; plural, based on a diversity of approaches (walking explorations, inhabitants’ stories, floating listening, sound recording, sensory reactivation, shared logbook); collective, thanks to putting to work the dynamics internal to the group of investigators as much as that of the inhabitants; interactive, as it makes for round trips between data collected, analyses in progress and field returns. The enigma of the silence of Condominío Barão de Mauá gradually emerged from this investigation.
